Sec 9: The Present Participle 3

Knowing that I was late, I ran all the way. Hoping to frighten the dog, he threw a stone at it. Feeling rather ill yesterday, I decided to stay at home. Thinking that the tin was empty, she threw it away. (Note: In this type of structure, the present participle comes before the word to which it refers. Do not use this pattern unless it is clear that the participle expression refers to the subject of the following clause.

sec 5: The colon

The colon (:) The colon is now seldom used but is necessary: 1. to instruct an enumeration (naming one by one) e.g. send me the following articles: a pen, a ruler, a brush and some writing paper. 2. to introduce a speech or quotation beginning with the words like "thus", 'as follows" e.g. The poet Keats wrote of Autumn thus: "Season of mists !" 3. to introduce long quotations e.g. The following are the chief cities: London, Paris, Moscow, New York, Bombay.

Sec 3: Either ... or...; neither ... nor, as well as

1. If both subjects are singular, the verb which follows "either... or" must be in the singular. e.g.  a. Either his father or his mother is ill.  b. Neither the boy nor the girl speaks English.  2 If both subjects are plural, then the conjunctions "either... or", "neither ... nor" must be followed by a plural verbs. e.g.  a. Either my friends or your friends have done it.  b. Neither his brothers nor his sisters are good.  3. If one subject is singular and the other plural, the verb is in the plural.  e.g.  a. Either he or they have it.  b. Neither she nor we are angry.  4. If one subject is plural and the other singular, the verb is in the singular.  e.g.  a. Either they or he has it.  b. Neither we nor she is angry. 

Sample Essay 1: Describe a Person

Mr. Bryan is very tall and well-built with broad shoulders and muscular arms and legs. He is very fir for a Chinese man. He always wears a cap and has a big, bushy beard. His nose is long and hooked and rather aristocratic-looking but he has the warmest and dreamiest eyes I have ever seen. He is always smiling rather sweetly in a dreamy sort of way.

EWS 15: Clause with "so"

Siew Peng was hungry. She ate two slices of bread. Siew Peng was hungry so she ate two slices of bread.  She felt thirsty after that. She felt thirsty so she drank a glass of water. I have been playing football the whole afternoon so I am feeling hot. I am hot so I am sitting under the fan. I have left the windows open so that there will be more fresh air.

Ews I4: Pronouns: herself and myself

Kee Song is holding  a kite.  He is very proud of it.  He made the kite himself  Did anyone help him to make  the kite?  Jane and Ruth are showing  their teacher a picture themselves.  Did their teacher help  them?  No; they drew  the picture themselves.  Mr  Kong made a wooden chair yesterday.  He is telling his friend, "I made  this chair myself. I painted it myself, too."  Did anyone help him?  No; he made and painted the chair himself

Ews 13: Preposition: Top of the

 This is a car  This is the-top of the car.  It is not the bottom  of the car.  The engine is in the front of the car.  It's at the back of the car.  Are those  the legs of the car?  No, they aren't. They are the wheels of the car. This is Bryan's house.  the front of the house is blue and The back of the house is green.  What is on top of the house?  There is a red roof  on top of the house.  Bryan's house is in front of the  house.  Is there  a tree at the side of  Bryan's house?  Yes, there is a tree at the side of  his house.

Ews12: through, along, across, towards and round

EWS 11: Preposition: through, along, across and round

Kim Cheong is walking across the road. He is walking towards the bus-stop. He goes go school by bus. There's the bus! It is turning round the corner  It will along the road for kee Cheong to get in.  Kim Chong is going to Bryan's house. Bryan's house is quite far. It is round that corner. Kim Chong wants to take a short-cut. So he is going to crawl through  a hole in the hedge. Look! He is crawling through the hole now.

EWS 8: Common gerund
